A common misconception when it comes to roof ventilation is that "more is better." Many people think that they can improve ventilation by installing louvers all along the expanse of the roof. What they don't know is that this actually causes a ventilation short circuit. For instance, let's say that Veronica has a full soffit and a ridge vent system installed. Thinking that more is better, she decides to install a couple of vents about halfway up her copper slope roof. Louvered dormers installed with this lack of forethought do not improve ventilation because air is now leaving the vents in the middle of the roof before it reaches the ridge, leaving the attic partially unvented.

Depending on wind pressure, air will also be taken in at the intermediate vents reducing intake at the eaves where it should be. There is also the problem of weather infiltration. Wind blowing across the surface of a roof creates negative air pressure. Nature will automatically try to compensate for this by moving air from higher pressure to lower pressure. Areas of higher pressure, such as the inside of attics, will experience air removal in this manner. It must be replaced and if the proper intake ventilation isn’t used, then air will be brought into the attic through exhaust vents and will at times bring moisture with it (installing metal roofing panels and siding can reduce the infiltration of moisture). When determining ventilation needs, remember the following: Intake and exhaust ventilation should be installed at an approximate one to one (1:1) ratio. Place more of them at the eaves and where downspouts join if it can be accomplished (otherwise consider installing wall louvers). Take into account the 1/300 rule - 1 square foot of attic ventilation (Net Free Vent Area) per 300 square feet of attic floor space. No attic vents should be installed between the intake and exhaust vents. There should be at least three feet of vertical distance between the intake and exhaust vents.
